As you serve in the military, you have a chance to travel and see a lot of the world. Living in a number of locations during your duty career can be a real advantage, but just as some places that you encounter are the real thing, and some are sort of a façade, the same can be said about Colleges and Universities. There are some things to watch for in finding a school for you to attend, and some things that you should be aware about. There are a high number of colleges and universities that are genuine, and there are those that are simply “Diploma Mills,†Here are some of the things to be aware of:
Accreditation- Make sure the college or university that you have selected is properly accredited. There are six different regional accreditation groups in the United States. The United States Department of Education and the US Counsel of Higher Education Accreditation work to license colleges and universities in the United States. Some higher level careers such as nursing or engineering require additional certification.
Transferability- Most Universities and colleges have some sort of transfer policy, but it is important to figure out if the credits you take will transfer to other schools. This is not all that big of a deal, most colleges will look at your transcripts and give you credit, at least partial credit if the courses you have taken are accredited. That’s another reason why it’s important to attend an accredited institution.

Military Friendly- This may seem silly at the outset, but many universities and colleges in the United States work to make attending by veterans easier than others do. Some are positively military friendly, and the ease that they make application through the actual attending the school can make it a huge difference.
Delivery Method- This is only an issue for the convenience of the student. It used to be that distance learning was looked down on, or attending classes online was deemed not as valuable, but that has been largely changed over the last several years. Now, whether you attend in person or by long distance, you should choose the institution and program that fits your schedule, your interests and your goals and select the school that is the best fit.
