Progressive Changes Made By Community And Citizens
During the time that Saddam Hussein was in power there was not any pretending about elections, there was one candidate during the mock elections, one way to vote: for Saddam Hussein. Those that refused to vote or to check the box for Saddam Hussein would possibly disappear, or worse.
Now, the region of Arab Jabour is abuzz with change, and with the elections held in Bejiya on May 14th there are now democratically elected candidates, by representative votes from their community. This is a new idea for many Iraqi citizens, and is being welcomed with open arms. “Democracy is a new idea in Iraq,†said Sadi Kalif. Kalif is the South Rasheed Community Council leader, and as the newly elected chairman he is looking forward to meeting with members of the Coalition and other local Iraqi Community leaders.
There have been years of battle, terrorist activity, and insurgency activity but through it all the people and citizens of Iraq have began to learn to trust the idea that is democracy. They are also discovering that each neighborhood starts democracy in their own neighborhood.
