Commander In Chief Visits Basra Area

President Bush Pauses To Interview Iraqi VP

President Bush noted the recent improvement of security as he made a whirlwind stop in Basra during his recent trip to the Middle East. President Bush stopped in Iraq and met with Iraqi Vice President Al-Mahdi In Sharem El Sheikh in Egypt on May 18th, before briefly stopping in Basra on his route home.

President Bush spoke at length to the representatives of the Iraqi delegation to the World Economic Forum that was being held in the Middle East. President Bush was pleased with much of the progress in Iraq recently. “We are pleased with the success in dealing with Shia Extremists in Basra by the Iraqi Government,” stated President Bush.

Iraq is necessary to the overall success to the region of the entire Middle East, President Bush said during the meetings. “The Middle East realizes how important it is to have a successful and prosperous Iraq,” said President Bush.

Overall security issues in Iraq are continued to be focused on fighting Al Qaeda and putting pressure on overall Al Qaeda operations, especially in the north. In the city of Mosul a fairly large cache of weapons was discovered and removed, well in advance of the brief stop by the President.

In Diyala region there were two incidents of suicide bombers, which killed one person and wounded 17 others. During another operation near Khan Bani Saad Iraqi security requested and received air support from the coalition leading to a successful aerial repeal of forces in the zone.
