The Defense Information School is the facility that the United States Military uses to train and educate military personnel in documenting and communicating with the public and the media. When any of the five Armed Services, the Marine Corps, The Army, The Air Force, The Navy, or the Coast Guard seeks to train Servicemembers in media type communications they often send them to the Defense Information School to receive their training. The training program is ran by the Department of Defense, and they made the current school from three different programs, the DoD visual Information school, The DoD Photography School, and the Defense Information School. All three were combined and condensed into a single program in 1998 into what is now known as the DoD Defense Information School. It is where each of the services has personnel that learn how to portray the military in magazines, newspapers, the media, in print, and over the airwaves.
The DIS school takes enlisted personnel and trains them to act as military liaison personnel as public affairs members, photographers, journalists and other media military personnel. It receives candidates from each of the five armed services in the USA. Prior to the start of World War II most of the Armed Forces public affairs work was accomplished by civilian media personnel who were embedded with soldiers on the front lines and throughout the military. World War II itself revealed that the military should have its own branch of media that works in the public affairs and journalistic endeavor. So the first Army Information school was started right after the war in 1946, and continued to operate until the year 1951. It was changed to the Armed Forces Information school. It struggled and found its own identity slowly and in 1964 the name was changed again to the Defense Information School.

In the year 1992 the DoD transferred command and control of the school over to the American Forces Information Service of the United States Military, and the school was moved in 1995 to the present location at Fort Meade, Georgia. Each year Servicemembers from all five of the military Armed service branches attend the school and receive training in journalism, photography, and public affairs issues. It has emerged at the premier journalism school for the Armed services and serves to help the military get out its information in an effective manner.
