Air Force Officer Extends Tour Twice

Airman Stays To See Iraqi Air Force Goals Achieved

Sometimes you are able to start a project and not able to see it through to its conclusion. At other times you are lucky or blessed enough to see the fruits of your efforts. In the case of an Air Force Major serving with the 770th Air Expeditionary Squadron, sometimes it takes extending your tour of duty twice.

Major Jiro McCoy is the commander of a multi role helicopter group stationed at Camp Taji in Iraq. He voluntarily extended his tour of duty twice to see that the goals for the new Iraqi Air group were met. “There were goals that the Iraqi’s have that I wanted to make sure happened,” said Major McCoy. “Now that they have made tactical and operations improvements, I feel very comfortable leaving,” stated McCoy. The 770th AEAS air helicopter group is responsible for training and assisting two squadrons of Iraqi Air Force helicopters and crewmembers, and the ability of Iraqi helicopter crews is vital to the overall security of the region.

The process of training and equipping the Iraqi Air force with helicopters and trained crews has been a transition but it has gradually been a success. Overall the Iraqi helicopter squadrons have been able to achieve operational proficiency, with the guidance and assistance of coalition air crews and training provided by Coalition pilots.

“I was deployed here once before in March 2005 and I am pleased to be here when the mission is nearing completion,” said Major McCoy.
