Northern Iraq Conference For Women Held
Many of the women in the area of the village of Irbill have undergone and endured great poverty, suppression and violence in the last several years. They have been largely without a voice or representation for their concerns, or their issues, on a local level and on a national Iraqi government level. But slowly, that is beginning to change.
Women from different villages and communities throughout the northern part of Iraq gathered recently for a conference to talk about the very issues that they largely have not had any representation about. The purpose of the Northern Iraqi Women’s Conference is to give women a chance to get together, to visit informally and share conditions, events and issues with each other. It also is a first opportunity to give different women the chance to network, and meet other area women. Many women have been isolated, dealing only with members of their immediate family without any contact outside their family.

Many of the women at the conference were young new married women, but there were many women also present that have had many experiences. It brings together women from different communities in central and northern Iraq, and allows the women to talk and listen to speakers, and to share their diverse experiences with each other. The conference was sponsored by the MNF Coalition forces Baghdad and had a number of female enlisted and women commissioned Officers that lent a hand in organizing and setting up the conference, and ensuring that women from different communities were invited.
