Hillah Explosive Cache Uncovered

Weapons Seized And Destroyed By Joint Security Patrol

The security for the Hillah region has been successfully passed to the Iraqi Security forces, but there are a number of explosive caches that continue to be uncovered. One such large stash of explosives was found this last week near the village of Hillah, and it consisted of many different types of explosives.

The explosive cache contained several different magnetic IED explosives, 12 different mines, 130 blocks of C-4 plastique explosive, 10 EFPS explosives, and RPG launchers and ammunition. The discovery of this particular cache was found where there had been several smaller caches of explosives discovered in the past.

Criminal elements and extremist and insurgent forces have been largely chased away from the area, but they left behind in many situations hidden caches of explosives that are sometimes uncovered in daily life. When they are discovered, they are turned over to coalition forces, which have EOD explosive experts take them and destroy them.

Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, and Company B are the soldiers that most commonly back up Iraqi troops. The joint patrols formerly were responsible for patrolling the Hillah region.

Now that the security has passed to the Iraqi national police and Iraqi National Army, the patrols are instituted and done exclusively by Iraqi forces, but the members of the Coalition are still present as observers, and ready to assist at the request of the Iraqi forces, should they request or desire assistance.
