The Coast Guard has a number of different careers available, but none are as important as storekeeper. The Storekeeper, or SK is the person that is responsible for supply and storage. The storekeeper rating is one that is involved in procurement, storage, and keeping track of any number of number of different items that Coast Guard personnel are involved in using. Items such as technical items, provisions, spare parts, clothing, food, and other items of storage materials are part of the different items that the SK is responsible for. The SK is a master of supply and storage, and it is one of the most available billets in the United States Coast Guard, both Reserves and Active duty.
Storekeepers are responsible for financial accounts and keeping reports and accurate records. They are the personnel in the Coast Guard that are responsible for maintaining and keeping an inventory and record of logistics activities, that give the Coast guard the ability to perform its mission and function. Storekeepers are responsible to keep track of invoices, bills of lading, and to account for incoming materials. Large duty stations employ their storekeepers to perform many different functions, and warehouse functions. Many different types of warehousing and shipping functions are used by active duty storekeepers, equipment such as forklifts and cranes, including operating other shipping equipment. Storekeepers work in any of the different Coast Guard stations found in the service, such as Air Stations, Marine Safety offices, Small Boat units, and on every size of vessel that are featured in the US Coast Guard. Coast Guard Storekeepers also are stationed at stations overseas such as LORAN and other navigational and shore stations. Storekeepers attend training at Cape May New Jersey for 9 weeks of Basic Training, where they learn how to be an enlisted member of the Coast Guard. After that they will go to Technical Class A school for further training. A candidate for storekeeper should have good practical math skills, and organizational skills, as well as skills in customer service, dealing with people and performing under stress. You will work in a series of both simulated training situations and classroom training to learn the storekeeper billet.
