Southern Baghdad School Rebuilt

Coalition Works To Repair Schools

The ability for school children in the southern part of Baghdad to get an education had become very difficult in the last several years. Battles were raging across the region, supplies were short or non-existent, and the facilities and schools were in disrepair. The teachers had largely fled and the schools were all but gone because of all these conditions added together. With no supportive military forces present the battlefields were at times the schools themselves, they grew to become even more damaged and were looted. The schools were suffering from some of the same ills at the farms and local businesses.

This was the situation that the military of the Coalition found itself coming into in the spring of 2007. Members of the 3rd Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team came into the south of Baghdad and found Al Qaeda terrorists present and keeping students from the schools. The situation was rather dire.

Slowly the area security returned, and as the Coalition trained Iraqi security forces to maintain the security, they turned their attention to rebuilding the area schools. Working together with the Provincial ePRT Reconstruction Team 7 the 2nd BCT began to work to rebuild the local economy, and with that effort the schools also.

Iraqi Army and National Police are now effective in keeping the area secure, and the 2nd BCT has worked to successfully repair a number of the schools located in Southern Baghdad. The coalition has spent several million dollars in the last 12 months to reopen the schools and stock them with supplies, allowing schools to reopen and children to pursue an education.
