Iraqi Child Receives Humanitarian Surgery

Life Saving Care Assists 1 Year Old Girl

Sometimes it’s the little things that are the most important. A young Iraqi 1 year old girl has defied the odds all the way along, from the very beginning. Little Noor Majeed overcame many obstacles from her very first day, but without continuing extended medical care she may still pass away.

The little girl, Noor was born with a situation where the bladder is located outside the body. This is called “Bladder exstrophy,” and it is relatively rare disease. It is a congenital disease in which the person is born with their bladder outside of the abdominal wall. It is thought to occur about 1 time in every 50,000 births, and it occurs more often in boys.

The level of care that is required is extreme, and the type of surgery and care is not normally available in Iraq. With the assistance of the coalition and the United States Military, little Noor Majeed has been transported to Boston to the Children’s Hospital.

Along with a $100,000 donation for her medical care, many different people have stepped up to assist the small little Iraqi girl. The 912th Forward Surgical team initially treated Noor, and then they worked to get Noor to the United States for further treatment.
