Iraq Police Increased Despite Sandstorm

New Recruits Endure Elements To Be Sworn In

In Iraq being a police officer and member of the Iraqi National Army has been a job in the past that was not very popular. Citizens often felt it was a cop out to be a member of the government, which goes back to the days of Saddam.

Now, with the increased improved security situation, the overall issue has changed. The citizens used to view the government, and Army security forces from Iraq were not popular. The citizens now feel that the security services and the Iraqi Army are a positive situation, and they are clamoring to join despite the previous stigma.

Military officials with the 18th Iraqi Military Police Brigade worked recently to set up a recruiting station at the Furat police facility. The goal of 1300 recruits was considered a considerable goal, but then a sandstorm began, and the officials were not sure if the citizens would show up or not. Early in the morning the officials gathered to set up, and crossed their fingers.

More than 2000 citizens showed up, and the officials at the Furat Iraqi Police training facility were very pleased with the overall response. “We can process nearly 400 individual recruits each day, and the citizens all said that they wanted to return tomorrow and the next several days,” Said 1st Lieutenant Christopher Gehri.

Lieutenant Gehri is the officer in charge of Coalition Forces that supported the recruiting drive.

After more than 2000 showed up for the first day, the officials holding the recruiting drive were very optimistic. They believed that they would reach their eventual goal of 1300 new police recruits easier than was first believed.
