The United States Army Public Affairs Specialist is the person directly responsible for dealing with the dissemination of information and materials to the media. The Army public affairs specialist works with news releases, photographs, news articles and newspaper feature stories. You will work to coordinate and assist Army information and event publicity, and sharing military information. The Army public affairs specialist is the person that is charged to share important military and Army information as well as helping civilian media to get needed articles and other military information. Army Public Affairs specialists are trained to help all the civilian members of the media to gain access to all materials needed for the effective dissemination of Army related information. All Army programs and media related information is coordinated by the Army Public Affairs Specialists. Broadcast Television, Cable TV, radio, Internet, and print related materials are all necessary to provide the efficient stream of information for the Army. The different routes of information are all used to tell the Army story and providing civilian media with the help and assistance that they need to cover the Army related events. The Public Relations specialists for the Army also coordinate with making sure that soldiers are available for interviews and specific mission stories. When special assistance is needed by civilian media outlets and personnel then it is the Army Public Affairs Specialist that works to coordinate the different actions needed to perform the missions at hand. As an Army Public Affairs Specialist you will have to provide a variety of services including; arranging and scheduling a variety of interviews, conducting and leading various media training sessions, developing and brainstorming feature and Army news story ideas, and working as a escort and liaison to civilian media members. Training for an Army Public Affairs Specialist begins with the required nine weeks of Basic Training, followed by advanced individual training. Following Basic, you will attend twelve weeks of advance training at Fort Meade, Maryland. You will be instructed at the Defense Information School on how to perform the duties and Public Affairs Specialist Tasks. Hands on training with cameras, photographs, newspaper and media sources, and other journalistic skills will be taught to you. Part of the training will be classroom but other parts will be in the field experience covering news and feature events.
