One of the more rewarding job specialities in the Army is working with the Vehicle Body maintenance division. You will work on a wide variety of different vehicles including automobiles, buses and light trucks. You will utilize to assist on assignment with other bodywork on aircraft and tanks as assigned, and you will work on wheeled vehicles that are part of the Army motor pool. You will work on radiators, fenders, windows and body panels, and other vehicle body parts. You will use tools, electric arc welders and gas welders to perform both routine and specialized maintenance for the different types of vehicles in the Army motor pool. You will work on any number of different repair tasks, as well as assist other Army personnel with different types of vehicle maintenance.
You will braise, weld and alter the body shape of Army vehicles, and work with personnel to effect repairs after automotive crashes and other physical vehicle body injuries. You will prime and paint vehicles, automobiles and other types of Army vehicles. This is a great Army job as well a position that is available to receive a variety of different college and vocational credit. You can receive apprenticeship credit while working in this job field in the Army on active duty. You will start this job specialty begins with Army Basic Training for nine weeks, and then you will advance to technical School. Continuing after basic combat training is advanced training held at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds located in Maryland. While you are at advanced training you will work on vehicles in basic automotive theory. You will work on vehicle construction, body panels, fiberglass, and metalwork construction. You will learn surface prep and painting methods, and how to prime and paint different vehicles. You will be taught how to braze and gas weld, and how to arc weld. Upon the end of completion training you will likely be assigned to a large duty station where you can continue apprenticeship with older and experienced Army professionals inside your field.
