Working in the Army as a Veterinary specialist and Food Inspection person you will work with the supervision and inspection of food that is meant for consumption by humans. You will work to support Veterinarians providing service and support, and helping in all different aspects of Veterinary service. In your role as a food inspector, you will work to examine different food materials that are designed to be consumed and to inspect both food and facilities for veterinary services and activities.
Duties as a Veterinary Services Specialist and Human Food Inspection specialist involved you dealing with military and commercial sanitary facilities inspection, and examining preparation facilities, food processing, subsistence materials and conducting quality assurance procedures. You will work to prepare, transmit and collect different samples for food testing, as well as in person inspections of a variety of different food preparation facilities. Training for a Veterinary specialist and Army food inspection specialist starts with 9 weeks of basic training. Boot camp gives instruction on how to be an Army enlisted person. After basic training you will advance to advanced individual training for an additional 9 weeks of veterinary specialist instruction and food inspection methods. You will spend time in the classroom and in the field, dealing with protection and food supply safety procedures. You will learn skills including how to identify and remedy unsanitary food preparation situations, how to spot unsafe food and water conditions, the methods of inspecting dairy products, vegetables, water, fresh fruit, eggs, poultry and red meat, and how to examine and make sure foods are safe, including MRE and heat and serve military prepared meals. The job skills that you will learn as a Veterinary and Food Inspection Specialist will give you the ability to obtain employment with the Department of Agriculture, the FDA, CDC, and other related Federal Departments. At advanced levels you can literally be responsible for the approval and inspection of large scale military dining and food preparation facilities. If you have an interest in biology, chemistry, mathematics or food safety, and if you have any experience in the health industry or food services field this may be the ideal job skill field for you.
