Satellite Telemetry Air Force Careers

The Air Force Satellite telemetry specialist is an exciting and rewarding job field. You will deal with state of the art electronics, and be trained in the most modern and technologically advanced electronic equipment known on earth. You will work with telemetry and satellite equipment, as well as multiplex, radio and telegraph equipment, microwave communications gear, radio transceivers as well as a variety of other advanced electronic equipment. You will be trained on how to use telegraph multiplex equipment, similar in some respects to the equipment uses in the civilian telephone industry. You will work with terminal and satellite equipment including terminal consoles, parabolic and wide band satellite dishes, and learn how to set up links and networks using satellites in geo stationary orbit around the Earth. You will work on ground based terminals, and learn how to set up remote stations in an active satellite link system. Some of your responsibilities will include remote and mobile set up of gear in the field, and you will work to use different equipment in communications networks. Your job will involve a number of highly technical and sophisticated operations, some of which may be rated top secret, and for this reason you likely will have to have a high security clearance. The modern Air force of today uses a variety of communications gear, which entails using troposphere scatter, radio relay, as well as satellite linkage methods of communicating in real time to other military and civilian units. You will be assigned duties maintaining and operating a variety of different types of communications networks, as well as different various network systems used in the many missions that the Air Force has. Training will begin with Air Force Boot camp, where you will work to become an enlisted member of the Air Force. After graduation from boot camp you will proceed to technical school, where you will be trained in the latest electronic and satellite technology. You will attend technical school either at Fort Gordon Training Facility in Georgia or at Keeler AFB in Mississippi. You will be at technical school normally between 11 and 16 weeks, and you will study the basics in radio waves, microwave and satellite communications, as well as electric theory, electronics, and other state of the air technical issues.
