Joining the Armed Forces is an excellent opportunity for many people. As they work and learn a new job, many people do not think ahead to actually getting their degree or education. There are benefits that you qualify for while in the United States Military that you can maximize with a little bit of planning ahead of time. It’s a wise idea to work to plan your education from the first days of your enlistment, so to not miss any of the different opportunities that are available to you. Too many people put off their education planning until the end of their enlistment, and when they do that they can miss out on some of the most lucrative opportunities available.
There are programs that have to be started while still on active duty for you to qualify after you are done with your enlistment. Its important not to wait too long before setting up your education, if you wait till you actually leave the military and that almost without exception is too long to wait. The needs of the service, or your duty station can interfere with your education sometimes, but there are programs that allow you to get educational credit while you are on active duty. MGIB- The program that was set up by Congress and that has been adjusted over the years for the benefit of the Servicemember is the Montgomery GI Bill. It is a program that establishes funds for Servicemembers who want to get their education. But many enlisted people do not realize there are other programs also. Two parts of the Montgomery GI bill are the Top up, and Buy up programs. Both involve adding additional funds while on active duty to your MGIB account, they allow the Servicemember to maximize their educational funds that they receive later, after they are done serving on active duty. In the Buy up Program you add $600 dollars to your MGIB program, which allows you to get back up to an additional $5,400 dollars in educational funds later.
Credit for Service- You apply to have the different work and job experience that you have performed while serving on Active Military service evaluated. It is examined and then you are given college level credit for any training that entitles you to credit for training received. It is an advantageous program for those that are serving in a vocational or critical area that work in that could give them college credit for their service.
