One of the most rewarding jobs in the Air Force is the Nursing Program. The Air Force has worked over the last several years to update and redesign their Nursing Program. The new program is called the Nurse Enlisted Commission Program, or NECP. The Air Force views the new program as a win win situation, the new personnel are often tested Airmen who have been working in the Nursing field in the Air Force as enlisted personnel. The program is meant to assist those enlisted personnel who desire to become nurses who currently are serving in the Air Force. This program is designed to assist those Air Force Personnel who are already trying part time on their own to study and become nurses, but who have been trying to do this piecemeal. The program is designed to take enlisted people who want to become nurses and send them to school at an accredited university while they remain on an active duty status with the Air Force.
This program is an effort to assist and let the candidate be supported to attend school full time and to become a nurse while still being considered on Active Duty. The Air Force is serious about the program, including having an official selection board to enter the program. The Air Force views their enlisted service Airmen as proven assets that are reliable and full force multiplier factors in the Air Force Mission. Air Force officials have worked together with medical professionals to design and begin a course program to assist enlisted Servicemembers who desire to become commissioned Nurses in the Air Force. Applicants can apply and the selection board meets in Texas at Randolph Air Base. The first group for this new program is projected to be 50 students to begin classes for fall semester 2008.

To apply the candidates must be on active duty, be a citizen of the United States, already have completed at least 59 hours credit hours of college coursework toward a nursing degree, be below the age of 42, serving in the Air Force as E-4 personnel or above. The candidate also must be otherwise eligible for commissioning in the Air Force active duty ranks. This gives them the chance to work hard, study hard and to become nurses in the Air Force. How can a active duty E-4 obtain the required labs in Chemistry, A&P, etc., as part of the required 59 credit hours toward a nursing degree? My son is in Bagdad at this time, has about 33 hours of college credit, but unable to find Chemistry and A&P courses on Air Force on-line courses while he is serving there. He would like to become a nurse (preferably a flight nurse). |

If you are still looking for answers to your questions, try DeVry University online. I have taken all of my science ( A&P 1 and 2, Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry) thru DeVry while deployed. He will have to check with the college he is looking at going to, to make sure they will except the course from DeVry. The college that I am going to go to UMSL, excepts them but they first had to do a course evaluation. I am applying for the NECP program in 2010. Like I said, I did all of my pre reqs thru DeVry and they are 8 weeks classes so. Hope this helps. |

Mountain State University also offers correspondence courses online for Chemistry, Microbiology, and A&P 1 & 2. I fulfilled some of my prerequisites through them. I was accepted into the NECP program last year, and currently attend UMSL. Pretty cool to see someone else applying and seeking a BSN through UMSL! Brandon & James, Do those classes include the labs that are required?? That might sound like a stupid question but everyone ive talked to so far about it (that are not in the NECP) say that i actually have to GO to a college and take a class…..Im wondering b/c im single parent in the AF and just recently got to my base but want to go through this program and dont really have any means of being able to take a college class right now without taking it online.
