Basrah Facility Cuts Infant Mortality

New Medical Center Reduces Death By Half

The Basrah region has had different medical support, but now it has a new facility that is nearing completion. The new project is at the Basrah Children’s Hospital, in remodeling and rebuilding the Basrah Infant and Children Medical Facility. It is thought that when it is done it will continue to reduce the number of cases that have to be treated outside of Basrah.

When the Children’s first hospital opened in Basrah it helped reduce the number of childhood deaths from lack of medical support. The number of deaths for infants in particular was cut in half, and the new addition to the children’s hospital is expected to cut the infant mortality rate even further.

The project that is currently in progress is now at $163.8 million dollars, and it is not just US Funds but also a $22 million dollar grant submitted by the nation of Spain, and $30 million from private USA sources, and $9.8 million from the Health Ministry of Iraq.

New hospital construction is not necessarily a brand new issue, but the rate of infantry mortality has been annually very high until the creation of the current hospital. The new Basrah Infant area of the hospital will be a welcome addition and continue the trend of cutting infant and childhood deaths in Basrah.
