Camp Arifjan- Kuwait.

The Former U.S. Secretary of State, Retired General Colin L. Powell pulled a surprise stop in Kuwait last Sunday.
Major General Dennis E. Hardy, Third Army, accompanied Secretary Powell.  General Hardy is also Army Central Deputy Commander.  Both men were greeted by loud and sustained applause from several hundred upbeat and enthusiastic service members.

Secretary Powell related that he was proud to have worn the uniform of the U.S. Army, and to have served as a soldier.  He also spoke of his anniversary; in June of 2008 he celebrates fifty years since he first began service in the U.S. Army as a second Lieutenant.  Service members greeted Powell enthusiastically; he was very popular as a commanding officer and also held in high esteem and regard as Secretary of State.

Colin Powell has always been seen as a “soldiers soldier”.  Service members shook his hand, and Secretary Powell greeted and said hello to as many people as he was able to. The service members reached out to greet him and he reached out to meet and greet everyone that he could.

Secretary Powell was traveling in Kuwait on the way to speaking engagement.   Serving as a general in the U.S. Army, Powell also was proud to serve as National Security Advisor, and was at one time the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during the conflict of the Gulf War, which freed Kuwait from Saddam Hussein.   Colin Powell also served in the National Security Council, and was promoted to a Four Star General under President George H.W. Bush.  Powell then served as the U.S. Army Forces Commander in Chief over all Army, National Guard, and Army Reserve Units in the USA.
