A member of the Army Veterinary support staff works closely with other Servicemembers and Veterinarians, serving their country in providing direct supportive animal care. A Medical Animal Care specialist can perform quite a variety of duties. They are directly responsible for caring for government animals, and they are required to perform a wide variety of management, direct animal care, and assisting in the sanitary and health needs of Army service animals.
Animal Medical Care specialists in the Army calculate and administer medication, assist in surgery on animals, and provide specific animal care by direction of Army Veterinarians.

They are responsible for monitoring and recording animal vital signs, and providing directed treatment and animal care support by direction. They clean and disinfect wounds, and even can at times suture some wounds when directed by an Army Animal Veterinary staff member. To serve as an Army Veterinary Assistant you should have normal color vision, be in good physical shape, and be familiar and comfortable with direct animal care.
