Competition Held Between 14 Regional Teams
The game of soccer is very popular in Iraq, and the southern Baghdad area is holding the Rashid Olympic games. It is a regional Soccer tournament, that currently has 14 different soccer teams participating.
The games were sponsored by the coalition, who advertised the event, worked to advise community leaders as they set the games up, and then cheered in support of the teams playing.
The leaders of the Rashid games were a little hesitant, they had never had the opportunity to sponsor such a thing before, and this is a set of games between the teams that so far has been very successful.
In fact, the community is so pleased with the soccer tournament that they want to hold the tournament every year. In pursuit of that goal, the coalition soldiers that are acting as advisors to the program are giving a lot of care and attention to train the participating Iraqi tournament members so they can hold the event next year without help if necessary.
This year’s tournament is well organized with teams, officials, rules, and referees. The community has come alive in support of the tournament, many people are not familiar with organized community activities or games, and they see the potential in the event.
