Western Al Anbar Smugglers Targeted

ISF Forces Cooperate With Coalition Soldiers To Pursue Criminals

The area of Western Al Anbar has become a safe area, but there continues to be a problem with smugglers that try to get a stronghold established to operate from. With the continued efforts of the Coalition and the ISF forces, this has not been possible, and it has been to the cooperative efforts of the joint forces that have kept the smugglers out.

Recently there have emerged a new type of threat to the safety and security of the region- smuggling of oil. Members of the insurgency are tipped off when a oil shipment is scheduled, and twice in the last six months shipments of oil or oil products have been hijacked.

It is believed that these two shipments were seized by terrorists or insurgents trying to find ways desperately to fund their operations. The coalition has dispatched Regimental Combat Team 5, 2nd LAR Bn, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance, Delta Company to prevent these seizures from continuing.

“These small towns provide possible home areas for insurgency to operate out of, and that’s why we were requested by the Iraq Government to make sure that these activities stop,” said Captain Joseph C. Maher.

Captain Maher is the Delta Company Commander tasked to support the Al Anbar anti smuggling efforts.

For now, the Delta Company will give support and as needed pursue members of the insurgency as they are discovered. This will continue to make Al Anbar a safe and secure place.
