US Navy Education Voucher Program

The US Navy has learned many valuable lessons in the last decade. The Navy did not stress education for many decades; it was seen as something that could benefit the individual, but not an issue that could benefit the Navy directly. All that has changed in the last several years. The more seasoned long time Navy enlisted personnel can likely remember the days when education was not stressed as it is today. The educational benefit was seen by US Navy leadership as an effective “Education aboard ships at sea,” and the actual study and academic pursuits to gain a college or university degree was just not seen as an important event. Because of this, in days past there was just not a lot of effort given over to assisting Navy personnel to obtain a degree.

Beginning after the Vietnam War, the United States Navy started to re examine how they view typical education and how it affected the US Navy mission. As they began to look at the benefits of education they realized that the more education that their personnel participated in, the better suited to performing their duty they were. The Navy has worked to set up a number of different educational programs, and one that has started just recently is the Navy Education Voucher. The Navy Voucher program works to support education for senior enlisted personnel at pay grades of E-7 to E-9. Those who seek enrollment in the program must desire to seek a master’s degree, or a bachelor degree. It is a program that exists to support and give financial assistance to get a college or University degree. The person or individual who desires to get a university or college degree who is a senior enlisted person can receive financial help from the US Navy. It is an excellent program for senior enlisted personnel and can aid in getting a leg up on educational programs. There are some different qualifications and restrictions. The individuals and personnel have to be at the rank of E-7 or above, and have served in the US Navy for at least eighteen years. Courses that are taken toward a degree have to qualify for funding. They do that by being what is referred to as “Navy Relevant” or courses that will benefit the Navy or the Navy mission in some manner. Applicants that apply for this program have to be members with superior ratings and support from their Commanding officer. They should be eligible for continued advancement, and have positive career ratings.
