The Topographical Analyst in the Navy functions in many ways like a surveyor or civilian land assessor, someone that works in a survey department for state or municipal department. It is a position specialty that is deals with maps, charts and images. You will deal with information regarding military operations and battlefield conditions. You will work to provide information for commanders, battlefield mission specialists, and military planners. You will deal with existing charts and survey material, as well as real time information and data to help commanders as they plan different military missions and military readiness responses.
The position of land surveyor is one that deals with a lot of different types of survey information, both traditional and modern digital types of information. You will work to deal with different charts, maps, and drawings of land and deal with a lot of different kinds of images. You will produce digital photographic images; Geospatial information, data downloaded from satellites, and remote and computer generated topographical images.
You will work as a Navy Topographical Specialist to assist and provide information on troop, ship and vessel movement, and the actions of any foreign or enemy troop activity. You will work to provide information about enemy movements and deal as a data collector, processing and distributing data as needed. As a Navy Topographical Analyst specialist you may have to build scale models of a land and water area to illustrate geographical features such as hills, lakes valleys, islands, or to scribe features on different surfaces. You will deal with various special information, geographic maps and information, and digital photo formats. You will process special information, overlays and different types of Data to be used in support of Navy military Missions. Training as a Navy Topographical Analyst starts with Basic training for 9 weeks, where you will learn how to work as a trained Navy enlisted person. After basic training you will then attend training for 18 weeks, where you will receive specialist training in satellite equipment and topographical training. You will learn to operate photo aerial interpretation training, survey techniques, and architectural drawing training.

During your training you will receive training in the classroom and in simulated field conditions, including photo aerial interpretation, drafting and surveying techniques After training you will be assigned to a field unit and function as a enlisted advisor to field commanders and military leaders in the field.
