Coalition Ship Visits Umm Qasr On Port Call
The recent celebration for Iraqi Navy Day marked another milestone for the progress of the Iraqi Forces. As part of the celebration the United States vessel the USS Firebolt made a port call to Umm Qasr.
This is a new experience, because the whole idea of a Port call shows the confidence in the system and using facilities normally reserved just for Iraqi usage. The United States Navy has not availed themselves of a port call previously, and it shows how much the Iraqi Navy has grown and matured.
The visit gives Iraqi citizens a chance to see the United States Navy in a closer means, and gives the sailors on the USS FireBolt an opportunity for shore leave, in supervised conditions.
While they are in port the members of the USS FireBolt are able to interact with the citizens, and to build friendship building activities with citizens and members of the Iraqi Security Forces.
An Iraqi officer has worked to support the Port call visit from Umm Qasr and then went forward, and was able to convince the US Navy to allow the USS FireBolt to visit.

The Iraqi Security Forces are hoping that other coalition vessels will follow suit and deal with coalition ships visiting on a regular basis. Senior Iraqi security officials are hopeful that more Port calls are possible in the future.
