The United States Military has established some different recreational areas around the world, that are reserved for members of the Armed Forces only. One of the best known is the area that is reserved on the property of the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida. Most civilian visitors to Walt Disney World do not realize that there is an entire resort on Disney World property that is dedicated to providing for the rest and relaxation of members of the United States Armed Forces. It is owned by the Department of Defense, and the land is leased to the DoD on a long-term lease by the Walt Disney Company.
It is called the “Shades of Green” and it is dedicated to United States Armed Forces Servicemembers, their families, and Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. The Armed Forces Recreation program runs the resort and it is a very nice place for Veterans, military people and their families to stay when wishing to vacation at Walt Disney World. The Department of Defense realized a number of years ago that it would be to their advantage to establish different locations where Armed Forces Servicemembers can go and relax, and be able to stay at reduced prices to help make their time off and recreational vacations affordable. The Shades of Green Disney World Facility is is strictly reserved for Servicemembers and their families. It is available in some cases to members of the reserves and National Guard, but the general public is not allowed to stay there, it is strictly military only. There are a number of other resorts on Walt Disney World Property that are available for civilian usage, but the Shades of Green is the only one restricted to military personnel only. It has access every twenty to thirty minutes to Downtown Orlando, and each of the other Walt Disney World Attractions.
Large comfortable passenger buses transport passengers free to each of the resorts, and to the different attractions. There are Two Disney World Water parks, Three Disney World Parks, as well as a variety of other recreational opportunities are available. A circus called Cirque Due Solis is available at Downtown Disney, as well as The Wax Museum, House of Blues, and other night spots and restaurants.

The Shades of Green resort is the only resort of its type on the Continental United States. There are two PGA Golf courses nearby, and an executive nine-hole golf course is also close by. Shades of Green has specific guest rooms for those with special needs, and meets all American Disability Act guidelines in their disability equipped rooms.
