Disabled Veterans Gain Needed Mobility

Disabled Veterans Gain Needed MobilitySegway Transporters Aid Soldiers

Many times people do not comprehend the difficulty that disabled veterans have in simply enjoying the things we take for granted.  Gaining entrance to an amusement park, walking, shopping, these things we take for granted are hard for those who have given a limb in military service, or who are disabled.

But Times are changing.

Army Sgt (retired) Eric Castro, age 27 is one example.   Mr. Castro recently received a Segway personal transporter and this was a life changing event.  He can now attend classes at Arizona State University where he is a student more easily.  Little things like cruising the mall or getting the mail are now simple where they used to be fraught with difficulty.

“The best thing of all is now I can enjoy and stay a long time in an amusement park” said Castro.

Mr. Castro is among fifty six veterans who recently were given a Segway from an organization called Segs4vets.  Segs4vets is a humanitarian and charitable organization that is headed up by a businessman who is also disabled.

This group is giving away forty two of the stand up scooters to veterans and disabled former service members who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq.  That remaining seventeen scooters are to be awarded this week in Arlington, VA.

While a Segway is not an actual medical mobility approved device, disabled veterans state that using the Segways allow them much greater mobility.  Disability therapists like them in that they force disabled people to stand longer, getting them used to their prosthetic limbs.
