US Soldiers Win Marksmanship Gold Medals

Two U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Members Win Olympic Gold

Members of the United States Army have participated in the Olympic Games in the marksmanship area for the last fifty years, since the 1956 games. Members of the US Army Marksmanship Unit, (AMU) again competed in the Olympic 2008 games in Beijing this year, and two of the six members won Olympic Gold Medals.

Private First Class Vincent Hancock won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic games for Skeet Shooting, in a sudden death contest tie breaker between Pfc. Hancock and the Norwegian Marksman, Tore Brovold.

Hancock joined his fellow six soldiers and represented America, as well as representing the U.S. Army Marksmanship unit with pride. In addition to Hancock, Specialist Walton Glenn Eller III won a gold medal at the 2008 Olympic games in the men’s double trap shooting competition.

Since 1956, Army AMU marksmanship competitors that have competed for the United States team in Olympic competition have been responsible for winning nearly two dozen medals for the United States.

The United States Army has built the United States Army Marksmanship team into an organization that competes internationally in various marksmanship events, representing the United States or the US Army.

It also has a practical responsibility; it is part of a larger US Army research and development team. It does research into guns, ammunition, and marksmanship issues.
