Grand Canal Road Upgraded By Coalition

New Road Improvements Make A Huge Difference

When you think of traffic jams, you normally do not picture a location in Iraq. But recently with the safety and security in the nation on the upswing, there are places that traffic is thick, and some of this is due to different road conditions.

One of the issues that cause traffic problems is that the mechanical state of many of the cars belonging to citizens in Iraq is poor. It only takes one care broken down, or that runs out of gas at a crucial roadway checkpoint for traffic to build up for miles.

The Grand Canal road in the region of Taji is one roadway that has over time deteriorated nearly completely in places. The MNF soldiers of the 46th Engineer Combat Battalion MNF division works to help rebuild different roads, and one of these projects recently has been the Grand Canal Road.

The members of the Combat Coalition Battalion MNF worked with 8 different Iraqi Army engineers, and with their joint combined construction skills they are working to repair the Grand Canal roadway.

The road is literally hundreds of years old in many places, and in some areas the original cobblestone and rough-hewn construction is still in place. This has led to an overall deterioration of the entire roadway system.
