New Bridge Unites Kufa And Najaf Together
One of the most recent successful rebuilding projects has been the $6.5 million dollar bridge rebuilding project. The project has been a rebuilding of a bridge that crosses the Euphrates River, and it connects two Iraqi villages, one on each side of the river.
The villages of Najaf and Kufa are located on opposite sides of the Euphrates River, and they have not been connected, but have grown up as separate entities one on each side of the River. They have had different things that they share, but due to being separated by the river they have not had the ability to join or grow together as sister cities until now.
The previous government of Saddam Hussein basically ignored the two cities, and it was not until the last 24 months that the two cities began to realize the potential for having a bridge to unite the two villages.
The Coalition decided, along with the local Iraqi government that building a bridge will help the two villages grow successfully, and it will help give each access to goods and services provided by the other.
The new bridge is called the “Iman Ali Bridge,” and it is thought that the bridge will assist with local economic development, as well as helping the citizens of the two cities. The two cities also benefit from lighting systems, sidewalks, and other support structures that they gain as a result of the bridge.
