But when you are called to change your duty station, there are sometimes different financial resources that are available to the Servicemember. Members of the Military are required to go wherever the Servicemember is assigned. This means that on occasion a Servicemember will be assigned to a duty station and be required to travel hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles. As a single person, this is not normally too much of a strain, but if you have a family then it can be a distinct challenge. Members of the US military when required to change duty stations are normally given financial support to do so, but relocating when you have a family can entail more.
Because of the change of duty station, it can be more detailed and involved for a family to relocate, and the military realizes this. Because of this, there are different options and benefits available to a Servicemember who is relocating his or her duty station. Assistance for getting to your new duty station is available in the form of a pay advance that you apply for and receive from your command. You can get a pay advance either from your new command after you arrive, or from your old command before you depart. The money you receive can aid you with your change of station and the overall cost of travel and getting to your new duty station. You can apply for a maximum of 3 months of your base pay to assist you in your duty station move, to help with the costs and financial burden from moving, changing where you live, and transporting your family. It is important to communicate with your command, to investigate whether you qualify for the change of station funding. Military pay officers and finance military officials caution that you should only apply for the funds that you actually need. The method of pay allowance and housing advance is paid back by method of a paycheck deduction.

You can choose to apply for your assistance to help defray the cost of your move. It is highly recommended that because you have to pay it back to only apply for those funds that you estimate you actually need when you apply for advance pay. The advance pay and allowances is a type of military advance loan, and because of this it must be eventually paid back. You can wait 30 days to start the deduction after the first advance is made. Servicemembers who are married can also apply for a separate advance allowance.
