The United States Coast Guard is the smallest of the five services, and it is a service that actually is part of the newly created Homeland Security Department. It is assigned to a civilian federal department, formerly being assigned to the department of transportation. This is done because as a civilian agency when it boards ships on the seas it is seen as a civilian police action instead of an act of war. You will be the vital link in many US Coast Guard units; especially smaller US Coast Guard commands to make sure that everything runs smoothly.
