Remaining Al Qaeda Being Targeted

Joint Air Operations Tighten Race To Capture Remaining AQI Members

In 2006 the city of Balad was a huge mess of sectarian violence. It has insurgents and terrorist suspects, they would hide out in different safe houses and the community would hide them because they were in fear. They would allow the insurgents and terrorists to hide because if they didn’t they believed that they would be killed.

Now, things have radically changed. There is a number of different bases for both Iraqi Security Forces, and coalition forces including at least two forward bases that are jointly shared by the coalition and Iraqi Forces.

Balad and the surrounding region are safe, and they serve as a shining example of what can be accomplished by joint cooperation. After over 12 months of hard work, the Iraqi community have banded together and supported the efforts to keep them safe.

Now, if insurgents or terror suspects come into the region, they are then reported to the coalition, or to Iraqi security forces. This has given a lot of success that has been previously lacking. The use of different Air Assets also allow fast response when an area is identified.

Making sure that Al Qaeda does not get re established is one main focus for the joint forces. Now, if they find a safehouse or obtain a report of insurgency, they can swarm in with the full combined resources of the Coalition, and Iraqi Security. Often the Iraqi Security soldiers request air support and transportation, and the raids and patrols are led by the Iraq Security forces.
