Troop D Assist Literacy Efforts
Assiriyah
With all of the reconstruction and rebuilding currently going on in Iraq, it is rewarding to see efforts continue to help Iraqi Literacy.
Troop D, First Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat, 1st Cavalry has been aiding local Iraqi’s in various civil projects, including donating computers last week for a community center.
It was not safe until recently, with insurgent and terror attacks at an all time low. “It is a fantastic and wonderful thing that now that things are secure we can help do this,†stated
Captain Martin Wohlgemuch, Commander of Troop D. “We are finally safe enough that instead of mounting Combat missions we can do various civic projects to help people directly,†said Wohlgemuch.
“My troops love it, they go out and perform a civic project and then that is their patrol of the day†nodded Wohlgemuch. “We were able to donate eight computer work stations to help them re start their literacy programs. They want to have their village people have basic literacy and computer skills,†said Captain Wohlgemuch.
Classes are segregated, boys in one class, girls have another class.
The local village leaders have embraced the new program, and have been working to make sure there are instructors to teach the programs the computers will let people participate in,†said Captain Wohlgemuch.
“People here are poor, but they wish to be citizens of the world, and are eager to learn,†said the new community center director. He wished not to be named for personal security and safety reasons.
“We plan to use the new Ministry of Education curriculum for teaching basic computer skills,†said the center director.
