Rehabilitation Proceeds Successfully

Coalition Prisoners Released During Holy Ramadan Month

There have been a large number of prisoners that have been rehabilitated over the last year, and there has been less than 5 percent of them that return to prison for other offenses. The spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness has been especially present during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Sheik Abdullah Sami Al Asi Obeydi is a Kirkuk provincial council member and tribal leader. He has been one of the members of the local Iraqi leadership that has pressed for reconciliation and been one of the council members leading the charge for helping members re unite with their families.

The reconciliation process is not as simple as people may think, the detained individual has to meet with members of the Coalition, members of the Iraqi Government, and a member of the Iraqi religious community of their choice. After getting approval from each different member of the reconciliation community, only then can they proceed to getting released.

Each of the detainees work very hard to earn being released. They have to agree to give up all terrorist, insurgent and illegal activity, as well as agree to follow all the laws of the Iraqi Government. They have to pledge allegiance to the government, and only after meeting all of these different conditions, then they are paroled back to their community and family.
