US Texas A&M University Agricultural Team Assists Farmers
The team from the University of Texas A&M recently completed their agricultural study in Wasit province, near Al Kut on September 25th.
The governor of the Wasit province also took a detailed tour with the University team and discussed the progress being made in different agricultural areas. Nearly 50 acres of wheat and barley, 25 acres of cotton and corn, and 25 acres of watermelon were planted successfully with the help of the University team.
There are 6,000 fish and 11,000 chickens being raised at the same agricultural site. Because of the involvement of the Texas University team, there are a lot of options for the agricultural forces and farmers in the region. The leadership of the university has given a lot of the farmers the opportunities to start their own farms, using the model provided by the university team.
The project showed how to use greenhouses to raise tomatoes, and they are pioneering the use of drainage canals to raise health fish, which is a brand new concept.
The other growers have already taken their crops and fish to the markets, and the project is aiming to have all of their agricultural efforts hit the market after everyone else in Iraq has already sold their items.
