Two Years Of Silence Yields Morning Prayers Once Again
There was a long tradition of religious morning prayers that were heard in Samarra at the Maqam Ghaybat Shrine. Then, following the beginning of sectarian violence, the shia faithful were forced to stop because of the threats of violence. It is located at the same site as the ancient Al Askari Shine.
Recently the prayers were once again heard in the location, to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The faithful gathered the morning of September 30th to pray for the end of Ramadan, and to celebrate the ability to pray out loud once again.
Once again hundreds of people gathered at the Mosque for the Eid celebration and it was deemed a huge success. “We are gathered to celebrate the success of allowing the citizens to participate in their own religious pursuit,” said Major General Rasheed Flahe Mohammed, the commander of the local Iraqi Army Unit.
After a number of years, people began to talk about starting prayer again. Because of the success of the Iraqi Army and the Coalition, they knew that it was once again safe to worship in public, and so the issue of restarting morning prayers at the site began to be talked about.
