Coalition Intervention Prevents Terrorist Influence
One of the tops goals of forces in country and stationed in Iraq has been to win the minds and hearts of the Iraqi people. One of the main parts of this mission has been to the children.
Terrorists and insurgents working throughout Iraq have slowly seen their influence and power over the people slipping. They are aiming to re-establish their control by reaching out to the young people in Iraq and trying to indoctrinate them. This is something that has been noted and is being addressed by U.S. and Coalition Forces in the area.
“Unless we give kids positive information and messages that outweigh what the enemy is spreading, we lose†said Brigadier General Michael Nevin. Army General Nevin is Commander of 177 Military Police Brigade.
“The insurgents hand out money, and distribute guns. We have to combat that,†said General Nevin.
Over nine hundred juveniles and young teenage Iraqi young men are in custody with Coalition Forces. Of this number ninety percent are age fifteen to seventeen detained because they posed a security risk. “We do not see any real ideology among these kids,†said Nevin.
Many of these young men are open and receptive to being taught other ways. “We are finding that these young teens are enthusiastic, and willing to learn. They are participating eagerly,†stated General Nevin. The education and re-education opportunities that are being provided these young men in the Detention centers is crucial to mission success.
“They are learning that there is a future and that it can be a bright one,†said General Nevin.
