Anytime that a new member of the US military joins up, they bring with them their family. Often this is a new husband or wife that really is willing in spirit, but they are ignorant of any knowledge of what being part of a military family is all about. If you are new to the military service and married, there is a program available to wives of Navy personnel. Spouses of military Servicemembers often face a confusing level of information, requirements and real life situations that can be bewildering.

It is called the Navy compass program, and it is based on a similar program that the United States Marine Corps has. They are expected to know how to react when confronted with a variety of issues, situations and circumstances. This is a program that has been proven effective for spouses of Servicemembers to learn and get to know in a non-threatening, supportive environment all about what military service life entails. It is available to both wives, or in some cases husbands of Navy active duty personnel. Often they do not know what is expected, and this causes chaos in the personal and family live of Navy Service members. So, there is a program specifically designed to help give some relief. The Navy Compass Spouse Mentor program is specifically created to help Navy spouses adjust to what life in the Navy is all about. It is available to all Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps personnel who live in the area served by the local group. In some cases Army and Air Force spouses are eligible to attend also, it depends on the policies of the local group. The Navy Compass program is designed to function in sessions, each session or cycle runs for 12 hours.

It can be structured in several ways, but normally is in four classes of three hours duration. Topics included in each cycle include military history, Navy customs and traditions, military ranks and ratings, military rights and responsibilities, and other such subjects.
