Combined Forces Work To Protect Iraq Airfield
The government leaders have sat down and worked out a status of forces agreement that covers the region of the Al Muthana Air Base, and it will give the specific responsibilities for the Iraq and coalition soldiers. But a group of emergency personnel that work to fight fire have already worked out a workable relationship covering how to deal with emergencies at the air base, and at Baghdad International Airport.
The American, Coalition and Iraqi Firefighting staff have worked together to practice their response, and while the status of forces agreement has worked to settle military response issues, the response of fire personnel and emergency responders had already been worked out.
The activities and responsibilities of the airport work to present a series of challenges that are as different from normal military procedures as anything else found on the base. The 105th Airlift wing at Stewart Air Base in New York has been stationed at the air field in Iraq and has been crucial in setting up effective responses to different fire fighting issues.

The challenges in fighting fire are varied, but slowly the Iraqi fire personnel have been able to gain the training and abilities necessary to fight fire right along side of the other personnel, both from other coalition nations, and from the United States.
