Coalition Soldiers Field Teams And Compete With Iraqi Troop Teams
The use of soccer to help break down barriers has been an issue that has been used successfully many times in Iraq. Using soccer leagues made up of citizens, soldiers and members of the Iraqi police force have helped to allow different members to interact, as well as helping to give a way for different groups to share and have a common interest.
Recently the members of the Iraqi Army fielded several teams to play against different teams from the coalition. There were a number of tournament matches held near combat outpost base Adder, and the US team played against the Iraqi team in the finals.
The US team was called the “Rough Riders” and were comprised of soldiers from the 4th Brigade combat team, and they played against the Iraqi Motorized transportation team.
The Rough riders lost to the Iraqi team by a score of 5-1, but both teams were in a way winners, with the positive interaction that resulted from the tourney and the teams being in the finals.

It was a friendly rivalry that has gone on over the last several months, and it ended in a positive manner, with both teams made up from patrol teams that work together on a regular basis. The units may have been on opposing teams in the soccer competition, but they work together on a regular basis making sure that they perform patrols to keep the neighborhood and region safe.
