New Iraq Air Force Gains Combat Outpost

Milestone Marks Effort To Establish Iraqi Units

The overall success of the security in Iraq has advanced to the point that different members of the Iraqi Government are able to be transported into the countryside in relative safety. The Iraqi Air Force recently was successful in giving an aerial lift, flying a member of their own government without warning into a combat outpost in East Baghdad for a surprise inspection.

The Iraqi Air Force used a UH-1 Huey helicopter and the crew was an American Pilot flying as a supervising observer, and a newly trained and qualified Iraqi pilot. The crew also had a American coalition gunner flying on board manning the onboard machine gun for security.

This was a victory in the progress of security in Iraqi, there was a time not so long ago that the ability to fly with relative abandon into the country side with a important member of the Iraqi government would have been considered foolhearty.

The government member used the ride to go inspect members and soldiers of the 11th Iraqi Army division and see how they were manning a number of outposts in the eastern part of Baghdad. The Huey trip was a success, and it served to show both the local citizens and the members of the Iraqi forces that the Iraqi Air Force is becoming a serious professional military force to be reckoned with.
