Iraqi Youth Experience Bright Future

New School Openings Increase Opportunities

There were a number of different grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremonies this last week in different cities in Iraq. The US Army has now completed a series of projects involving the renovation or repair of over 1,000 schools, and they still have an additional 38 different school facilities that are ongoing in the repair arena.

The theme is one of hope and restoration as a number of schools were finally able to open. Many schools are now able to open for the first time this school year, and while they are opening late, it is seen as a very open and positive event that they are able to open at all. Many of the different schools had been nearly destroyed, so the efforts of the US Army corps of Engineers is well received across Iraq.

The ribbon cutting ceremonies across Iraq signals this completion of rebuilding efforts, but it also is one that gives the people of Iraq fair notice that their nation is finally starting to rebuild and heal itself.

Many of the members of the community are amazed at the number of different schools having been restored, and the community is starting to become much more involved in their schools. In the past, children attending school was seen as a luxury or a less than necessary ideal in many villages and communities across Iraq.
