Coast Guard Boatswains Mate Careers

The rating of Boatswains Mate has a long proud tradition. They deal with different deck operations, and they are experts in many different areas. They have knowledge of hoists, winches, cranes, and how to use cables ropes and other items. The Coast Guard has a long proud tradition, and the Boatswains Mate is one of the firm foundational blocks of the Coast Guard. Boatswains Mates are trained in Yorktown Virginia at the Petty Officer Boatswain’s Mate School, or can be advanced through on the job training in a striker program. The Boatswain’s mate is considered the command rating of the Coast Guard. Enlisted personnel in the Boatswains mate rating are the people that command small boat stations, and other units that have senior enlisted personnel acting as commanding officers. One of the more rewarding jobs in the United States Coast guard is the Boatswains Mate rating. There is a number of different law enforcement and advanced programs such as Buoy Deck Supervisor, Coxswain, Law Enforcement Fisheries, and Heavy Weather Coxswain are also available. They work to perform deck maintenance, seamanship, navigation, search and rescue, and supervising personnel assigned to the deck force of a ship. It is a rating that has expert seamanship knowledge and operation of various seamanship and deck tasks on board ship. It is a rating specialty that is vital to the mission and performance of the Active Duty Coast Guard, especially since September 11th, 2001. The Coast Guard is now part of homeland Security, having been transferred from the Department of Transportation. The United States Coast Guard has undergone many changes in the last decade. Boatswain’s Mates serve on all shore based duty stations, and aboard ships of every size and shape that are found in the Coast Guard Service. Boatswains Mates work to perform all the different tasks that are involve in Small Boat and Marine Operations. They know how and when to use knots, how to splice and seize line. Boatswain’s Mates, while an enlisted rating, will be assigned as the officer-in-charge of many different small craft, patrol boats, tugs, and shore units.
