Serving in the Marine Corps as a Combat Engineer can be very rewarding and challenging at the same time. Marine Combat engineers repair, alter, maintain, alter and adjust various structures and buildings. The Marine Combat Engineer is a jack-of-all-trades, a Marine who is called upon to be an expert soldier, but also to know a great deal about how to build, construct, and make things work.
This is not a job for weak minded!
There are a number of billets available inside the Marine Engineer Specialty. After boot camp, a Marine interested in this field will attend Basic Combat Engineer School, located at Camp Lejune, NC. As a combat engineer you will operate or serve as a crewmember on a variety of different Marine military vehicles. They work to perform a variety of different specialized demolitions in land mines and for urban land breaching is also taught. This is a job that requires you to be in good physical condition to perform as a Combat engineer. You should have normal color vision, and normal hearing. The Combat Marine Corp Engineer is a construction based MOS, but it also works to support different remodeling and reconstruction issues. In both Afghanistan and Iraq, as a result of the War on Terror, Marine Corps Combat Engineer specialists have been used heavily to help rebuild vital infrastructure, and facilities such as schools, clinics and other industries. Operational Combat Marine Corps Engineers works to perform a wide variety of different jobs. They work to perform different engineer and construction tasks, all the while being a fully qualified and ready Marine Corps Soldiers. Training will assist you to know how to locate and eliminate mines by visual or mechanical means. Servicemembers who are assigned to this MOS are taught construction and carpentry skills, as well as skills in demolition projects and destruction of objects. This can be a field with room for a lot of different types and styles of duty. You can be assigned literally anywhere that the Marine Corps Services, and be detailed as support for a variety of different Marine Corps Command groups.

ive been an engineer with 2D CEB for 3 yrs bust ur as in country and chill back here in garrison. and for combat gotta get with a line platoon in a COMBAT ENGINEER BATTALION like in Camp lejuene NC. Where im at most of us have been there n done that. If your 60% health dont bother with 1371 you wont make it. School for combat engineer is 3 mon. A combat engineer performs many duties including demolitions. contruction. route clearing.( urban and terrian). |

USMC999: Even if you’re not with an Infantry unit, you will still see combat. No matter who you’re with, a combat engineer will get some kind of action. Chris Marine DAD: Combat Engineer school, or CEIC, is only two months long and goes pretty fast. However classes can get full and he could get put into a later class. I was only there an extra month at most. |

hey my name is drew and i signed for the marines a few months ago. my mos that i chose is combat engineer. i know that there are three main jobs in the combat engineer field. their is division,Field Service Support Group and Marine Air Wing. i wanted to know which one youwould see the most combat in. do you also get to choose where you want to go in those three fields, or is it just where they want you to be? if you get assigned to a field where you dont want to be can you change it? also how long do you get to stay in that specific field of duty before they move you? i really want to be in the CEB and get attached to infantry platoons. I’m an active duty 1371, i love this MOS, To answer some of the questions on here, if you are part of CEB you are in the division, if you go to CAB you will be part of Division, If you go MLG you will more then likely be in a support element, Like and ESB. As for what you do as an engineer it depends on what unit you are with, I’ve done everything from Bridging and boat operations, to patroling and route clearence to swinging a hammer to demolitions and house/room clearing… in my personal opinion its the best MOS in the Corps, but its not for everyone… so make sure you really want it before commiting. Many 1371s never went to ES during the Nam days.OJT was the training,you learned from the old heads how to do it and perfect it better.The old heads were usually 19,20 and 21 YOs.Very common to be with 03s all the time in Vietnam and travel from I Corps from one end to the other.Marine engineers were in every operation in Nam,notably Hastings and Prarie in 66 TF Delta,one platoon served with the 4/503RD/173/AB,on Operation Winchester Oct.66-Dec.66 when the 4TH Bn. assumed the TAOR around DaNang.Marine engineers did patrols and ambushes LPs and OPs and personal experience fired many rounds from my rifle and M60 at the enemy.We also used M79s,and M72LAWs and did EOD work as well.It was a very interesting time for Marine Engineers. |
