Gay Museum Director Proposed For Secretary of Navy

Intrepid ReturnIntrepid Museum, New York Harbor-  In a surprised move, many members of Congress and retired military officers are suggesting that the next Candidate for US Secretary of the Navy should perhaps be Intrepid Naval Museum William White. William White is the CEO of the Intrepid Navy museum located on the former USS Intrepid, a retired Navy Air craft carrier that is anchored in the New York City Harbor, and plays host to a number of military machines, including a SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde, and other famous aircraft. There is just one problem:  William White is a openly Gay gentleman, and with the current “Don’t ask- Don’t Tell “ approach toward homosexuality in the US Armed Forces there would seem to be a conflict of interest. While the job is technically a civilian position, it would be in the chain of command for all members of the US Navy and US Marine Corps, and would cause a schism of confusion and uproar, due to the fact that Mr. White lives as an openly Gay man. It would also be harder to maintain the policy that was introduced “Don’t ask, Don’t tell,” regarding homosexuality in the US Navy.

This has a potential interesting twist to the curent US military policy. “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” was indeed a move in the right direction, though looking towards the British, and especially here in New Zealand where several fully fledged military members live “openly gay” lives (even having same sex partners on base). This has not lead to the sky falling in, or any apparent dysfunction in the forces. Honesty is always the best policy, so looks like it’s time for the US military to recognise this, move into the future, and do away with all these old discriminatory policies regarding sexual orientation.
