six-month-electric-vehicle-trial-ends1Grafenwohr, Germany- The US Army will not be using electric vehicles in Europe after all, following the conclusion of a trial period lasting six months. The US Army has been testing a vehicle called the Global Electric Motorcar, also known as the GEM from April 2008 until the present, to try and figure out if it was feasible to use in the US Army Fleet. For the most part, the three Global Electric cars did not perform up to expectations. They did not perform as well as they wished, and cars overall were failures to impress the leaders at the Grafenwohr military base. “They broke down a lot, did not have the necessary range, and were overall a big disappointment,” said Tom Hays, the director of the Grafenwohr military base public works department. The three vehicles were made in the USA by a company that is a subsidiary of Chrysler. Soldiers during the trial for on post inspections of trash sites, another of the vehicles were used for base mail runs, and the third vehicle was used for housing area checks on base. “We may test vehicles in the future, but we do not have any immediate plans to implement these, or any other electric type vehicles in our US Army Fleet,” said Hayes.
