global-strike-command-receives-interim-commander1Washington, D.C.-  There is a new interim Commander that has been named to head the Global Strike Command. Global Strike is the command that is in charge of the US Air Force nuclear mission. Air Force Brigadier General James M. Kowalski has been named to the post on an interim basis, and will head the Global Strike command for the near future. Much of the US Air Force Nuclear forces have been in disarray recently with as many as 3 units failing their annual Nuclear clearance testing, tossing the military readiness of these units out the window. Many people have said privately that in some ways the US Air Force Nuclear operations have been without a rudder, wandering aimlessly across the landscape. General Kowalski will head up the Nuclear command while a permanent location, and a permanent commander are decided upon. The command is expected to be first operational in September 2009, but the permanent location has not been decided for sure, according to Air Force Spokeswoman Captain Elizabeth Aptekar. After the permanent location is found, selected and approved then it will be a Command headed by a Air Force Three Star General, according to Captain Aptekar.
