Okinawa, Japan- The overall energy use that has been consumed by members of the US Navy and United States Marine Corps is being reduced.
The Servicemembers at the Japanese base will be relocated, about 10,000 strong to a new base in Guam.
The new base promises to be one of the most eco friendly of any Military base in the US arsenal. It is a base that will feature a concerted effort to decrease the overall energy consumption and energy usage as well as using a number of different eco friendly construction methods.
The US Navy is under pressure as is all of the United States Federal agencies to curb water and energy use, and to increase the methods and use of renewable energy. Defense Department goals have been bold, aiming to reduce up to 25 percent of the energy by 2025 currently being used.
When the new base in Guam is constructed, it will be with solar, wind and other types of energy production incorporated wherever possible. This is a bold new effort on the part of the US Navy, and if successful it will serve as a broad based energy model for the rest of the US Armed Forces.
