First Female General For Alabama National Guard

Colonel Sheryl E. Gordon of Eclectic will assume command of 62nd Troop Command of the Alabama National Guard.

She will be the first female general in the history of Alabama, and she takes over from Brigadier General Fredrick J. Johnson of Birmingham. She will be known as Brigadier General Sheryl E. Gordon.

The largest of four Troop Commands in the modern Army Alabama National Guard, the 62nd Troop Command has a large amount of equipment, personnel and materials assigned to it. Over 5,000 individual Alabama National Guardsmen are assigned to the 62nd.

Brigadier General Gordon is a former High School assistant principal and is one of the pride of Alabama regarding female advancement in the Modern Alabama National Guard.

She will command her unit at Fort Taylor Hardin in Alabama. She is a longtime resident, and lives nearby in Lake Martin with her husband.

“Back in the early days they made female officers personnel officers,” said Brigadier General Gordon. She was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1981. She graduated from the Alabama Military Academy.
